Te Whatu Ora - Nelson Marlborough, New Zealand

Predictive modelling of executive function patterns in child psychopathology

Phases I & II diagnostic accuracy clinical trials were started in 2014 , at Nelson Marlborough Health. Here we tested the screening/diagnostic value of our technology. The initial trials included cohorts of “ADHD combined presentation” and “typically developing” children (5 to 13-years old).

We recruited participants at the primary paediatrics service from Nelson Marlborough Health. The diagnostic reference standard comprised of case history, physical and neurological examinations, Conners 3rd Edition, and DSM-V.

Our technology is a computer based game inspired by 'Battleships'. Participants played the game eight times. From the game output, we computed mathematical complexity measures to be used in several machine learning, supervised classification models.

We are currently undertaking a second clinical trial that is an extension of our first diagnostic accuracy study. We are recruiting participants that meet the following criteria and are from Nelson Marlborough :

  • Children aged 5–13 years who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) level 1 and 2 with no comorbidities.
  • Children aged 5-13 years. This a “clinical control” cohort composed of patients referred to the paediatric department with a neurodiverse/mental health condition that excludes “ADHD combined presentation” and/or ADS level 1 and 2.
